It is incredibly frustrating to see consumers manipulated this way, which is exactly why I bought this machine with my own money to give you an independent look inside.

Taking the outer cabinet apart is a dream compared to the welded boxes these manufacturers were throwing at us 5 years ago. Removing the back panel and the top lid gives you instant access to a beautifully laid-out internal system. Just like its sister machines, this Haier model features a push-button door interlock release, meaning there are no hidden screws to fight with when you want to take the front panel off. The rubber door seal on this specific Haier model actually feels slightly thicker and more durable than the one fitted to the Candy. Once the front is off, you immediately notice the four individual suspension shock absorbers mounted to the base. Moving away from the traditional two-leg suspension system means this machine handles heavy, unbalanced loads exceptionally well without vibrating violently across your utility room floor.

The absolute best feature of this machine is the splittable drum assembly. Back around 2005, manufacturers started sealing their plastic tubs, forcing you to scrap the entire machine just because a 20 pound bearing failed. Thankfully, Haier has bolted the two halves of this drum together, giving an engineer or a confident DIYer the ability to crack it open. However, do not let that fool you into thinking the manufacturer is playing completely fair.

If you look at their exploded parts diagrams, Haier still refuses to sell the drum bearings, the spider, or the plastic drum paddles individually. If you want to buy the parts directly from them, they force you to purchase the entire back half of the drum assembly, which will likely cost you somewhere between a 180 to 250 pounds. The good news is that because you can split the drum, you can simply remove the broken bearings and take them to an independent local bearing supplier to match them up for a fraction of the cost.

When it comes to washing performance and energy consumption, this machine is brilliant, though it does have a couple of strange software quirks. Haier heavily advertises a Smart AI feature on the control panel, which sounds like some futuristic technology. In reality, there are no special cameras or magical sensors inside the drum.

The machine simply measures the electrical resistance on the motor to determine the physical weight of your clothes, and then adjusts the water level accordingly. It is a bit of a sales gimmick, but the inverter motor itself is incredibly efficient. During my tests with a heavy load of wet towels, the motor only pulled around 80 to 90 watts of power while turning the drum, jumping to about a hundred and 65 watts during a spin. It is exceedingly quiet, and it even has a clever function that flushes fresh water down the door glass during the final spin to wash away detergent residue and prevent mold buildup on the seal. Oddly enough, they left off a dedicated rinse cycle on the dial to make room for the AI setting, meaning you have to trick the machine by selecting a fifteen-minute quick wash and manually adding extra rinses if you just want to rinse a garment.

If you decide to take advantage of that 5-year guarantee and bring this machine into your home, you must change how you maintain it. Because this Haier uses incredibly low amounts of water and defaults to low eco-temperatures, detergent sludge will quickly build up inside the drum housing. This sludge causes galvanic corrosion, which is a chemical reaction that literally rots away the aluminum spider supporting your drum until it snaps in half. To prevent this, you need to ditch the liquid detergents for a good quality washing powder, and you must run the machine's dedicated drum clean cycle or an empty hot wash at least once a month. 

Overall, the Haier HW90 BP14357 AEUK is a massive step in the right direction for the domestic appliance industry. While I despise the corporate showroom games and the overpriced drum assemblies, getting a well-constructed, splittable-drum washing machine with a 5-year guarantee for just over three hundred pounds is an absolute bargain.
