Diagnosing and Repairing a Washing Machine That Won't Empty

In this guide, we will walk you through the steps to diagnose and fix a washing machine that won't drain. We aim to assist you in identifying the issue with your appliance and will guide you through the repair process.

There are four main reasons why a washing machine may not empty:

  1. Something might be stuck in the sump or the waste pipe might be kinked.
  2. The sink unit, to which the appliance may be plumbed, might be blocked, or a crosshair might be present within the fitting that connects to the waste pipe.
  3. The pump might be blocked by an object such as a coin or a piece of clothing.
  4. The pump itself may have failed and needs to be replaced.

We tried to be concise and give brief information on this guide, so we would recommend you watch our video since we're showing you how easily you can fix your washing machine emptying problem.

Before we start, ensure that the appliance is unplugged from the electricity supply for safety.

Firstly, as the machine isn't working properly, we need to remove the water inside. You can do this in several ways:

  1. Lower the waste pipe at the rear of the machine to ground level and let it drain into a bowl.
  2. Use the tube under the pump cover at the front of the machine to siphon out the water.

If neither of these methods work, you might need to remove one of the hoses underneath the machine or take out the filter at the front of the machine (if your model has one). Make sure to catch as much water as possible in a bowl.

To clear a blockage, you need to access the pump. A piece of cloth might have gotten jammed into it. Simply remove the cloth, ensure the seal is intact, then screw the filter back in. Please note that some filters only fit one way.

If there's a coin jammed in the pump, it may be a bit more complicated to remove. The coin can fall behind the filter unit and get stuck against the pump's blades. In this case, you might hear a humming noise from the pump area.

To remove the coin, you may need to use a pair of long-nosed pliers as it might be out of reach for your fingers. Once you've removed the coin, make sure the pump is clear, replace the filter, and test the machine.

The other three issues should be self-explanatory:

  1. The sink unit might be blocked, and you would need to dismantle it and ensure it's clear. Sometimes, there's a crosshair in the sink unit that needs to be cleaned.
  2. You might need to check the sump hoses for blockages or filters.
  3. You might need to conduct an electrical test on the pump itself.

Please remember that the whole video includes step-by-step and detailed explanations, which may help you reduce your repair time.
