Fixing Common Not Heating Faults & Circuit Board Errors on Hotpoint SI4854CIX Oven

How to Fix Not Heating Problems of Modern Electric Cookers Controlled by Circuit Boards?

In this guide, we will walk you through the process of diagnosing and repairing issues in modern electric ovens controlled by circuit boards. We'll be using a smart meter to help you understand the diagnostics. We focused on a Hotpoint SI4 854 C IX oven. Despite the different brands, the main components of these cookers are essentially the same.

We would recommend you watch our video since we're showing how easily you fix your Hotpoint oven's PCB (Printed Circuit Board).

Additionally, you can visit our web store to buy genuine spare parts: https://shop.how-to-repair.com/collections/cooker-oven-parts

Introduction to the Setup

As we said previously, our focus will be on a Hotpoint machine manufactured by Whirlpool, but we'll also reference Bosch and Beko machines. Despite the different brands, their main components are essentially the same. Each cooker includes:

  • A base element
  • A grill element
  • A fan oven element
  • A fan motor for air distribution
  • A cooling fan for the electronics

Cost of Replacement Parts & Reference Numbers

In older ovens, thermostats and selector switches typically cost around £20-£30, while timers could be as much as £50-£100. However, modern ovens with circuit boards are much more expensive. For instance, a display board may cost £130, and a main circuit board can be £150. This built-in obsolescence can make owning these appliances costly. That's why, we wanted to shoot a video which covers the common probs about the heating problem and printed circuit board.

Our example cooker is not heating on the main oven function. We've connected it to a smart meter to read the wattage or amperage, helping us understand which components are functioning. Here are the power values for reference:

  • Light bulb: 40 watts
  • Base element: 1300 watts
  • Grill element: 2600 watts
  • Fan oven element: 2000 watts
  • Fan motor: 20 watts
  • Cooling fan: 20 watts

Understanding these values is crucial for diagnosing issues.

At this point, we suggest you watch our video closely since we show how you can fix the common heating problems and also you can understand the working mechanisms of the printed circuit board and the relays.

Printed Circuit Board Components

The circuit board includes multiple relays, which are two high amperage and six lower amperage in this example, that control various components like fan motors, base elements, and cooling fans. In older models, these functions were managed by a selector switch and a thermostat. The thermostat, connected to a probe filled with gas, would expand as it heated, shutting off power at a preset value.

Diagnosing with a Smart Meter & Fixing the Problem

To diagnose the issue, we will use a smart meter to monitor the wattages as we test the fan oven setting, which is not working. Here’s how you can approach it:

  1. Check the Thermostat: Set the fan oven function and turn the thermostat to 100°C. The light should come on, indicating the fan and element are running. If the thermostat light goes out, it means the oven has reached the set temperature. If the light stays on but the oven remains cold, the fan oven element might be faulty.
  2. Monitor the Relays: Modern cookers use NTC sensors to send readings to the circuit board. If these sensors or the relays are faulty, power won't be sent to the element.

If you find that the element is not drawing power, you may need to:

  • Test the Element: Use a multimeter to check for continuity in the element. If it’s faulty, replace it. If you don't have one, you can buy a new multimeter via our affiliate link.
  • Inspect the Circuit Board: Look for faulty relays or blown tracks on the circuit board. Simple issues like these can often be repaired without replacing the entire board.

By following these steps, you can diagnose and repair common issues in modern electric cookers, saving both time and money. Remember, you can watch our video to avoid any potential problems.
