Washing Machine

Washing machine banging intermittently. Bosch Wae24277

August 02, 2026
Customer Question

Appears to have got more regular over the last 2 years. Intermittent banging at both high and low speed. Machine approx 9 years old and is bought and used about twice a week in Portugal. Apart from clogged filter/ water pump and inlet valve failure has worked perfectly. Not sure if the problem will be shock absorbers, springs or spider. I would like to know before buying replacement parts. Many thanks. David

Hi David,

Thanks for sending the video. I appreciate you taking the time to document the issue—it really helps with diagnosis.

After reviewing it, the intermittent banging you're experiencing is most likely caused by one of two things: an unbalanced load during the spin cycle, or worn suspension legs that have lost their damping ability.

Suspension Legs and Shock Absorbers

Washing machine suspension systems are designed to absorb vibration and keep the drum stable during operation. Over time, these components wear out and can no longer cushion the movement effectively. When this happens, the drum can strike the outer casing, creating that banging sound you're hearing.

The specific shock absorbers or suspension legs your machine needs depend on your drum type and model year. Earlier models often came with service kits that bundled these parts together, making replacement more straightforward. Newer models may require individual components sourced separately.

Replacing suspension legs is a moderately complex job that involves accessing the drum assembly, so it's worth having the correct parts on hand before you start.

Load Balance and Drainage

Before assuming the suspension system needs replacement, rule out simpler causes. Check that you're not overloading the machine—an unbalanced load during the spin cycle can cause significant vibration and banging. Distribute heavier items evenly around the drum.

Also inspect your drainage system. If your washing machine is connected to a sink unit or standpipe, a blocked or kinked drain hose can prevent water from emptying properly. This creates an imbalance load that forces the drum to work harder and vibrate excessively.

Finding the Right Parts

You'll find a list of compatible spare parts below, organised by model. If you can't locate the exact shock absorbers or suspension legs you need, contact us with your machine's model number. We can identify the correct components and ensure you get the right fit first time.

I hope this points you in the right direction. Let me know if you have any other questions.

This video will help you dismantle the machine to gain access to the shock absorbers
