Samsung WF8EF5E0W4W Washing Machine Makes Loud Squeak Noise When Drum Moves
I replaced the bearings in my (belt drive) Samsung WF8EF5E0W4W Washing Machine. I now have a continuous squeak whenever the drum moves. I think the problem is that when I replaced the water seal, I didn’t use grease. There was only a very thin layer on the shaft from wiping off the shaft. It looks like I need to pull the drum apart again to apply grease on the water seal. Can you tell me what type of grease I should use? Also, is there a possibility the un-greased water seal could have been damaged after running several loads at 1400 rpm spin speed? I don’t know if the squeak is damaging the seal or just producing an annoying sound. . Thank you.
A loud squeaking noise from your Samsung WF8EF5E0W4W washing machine drum can be frustrating, but diagnosing the exact cause requires careful investigation. Here's a structured approach to identify and resolve the problem.
Step 1: Video Documentation
The most effective first step is to record a video showing the problem in action. This allows me to pinpoint the noise source accurately. When recording:
- Remove the lid and back panel to expose the drum and internal components
- Run the machine on spin cycle and capture the noise
- Manually rotate the drum by hand and record any sounds or resistance
- Remove the belt and rotate the drum manually to isolate whether the noise originates from the drum, bearings, or belt area
Upload your video to a platform like YouTube and share the link with a qualified technician. Without visual confirmation, it's nearly impossible to provide a definitive diagnosis.
Step 2: Common Causes of Squeaking
Belt Misalignment: A squeaking noise often comes from the belt not aligning correctly with the motor or drum pulley. When reassembling, ensure the belt sits evenly on both pulleys.
Bearing and Seal Misalignment: During reassembly, bearings and seals must be perfectly aligned. If they're misaligned, the seal may rub against components it shouldn't touch, causing a squeak. When tapping bearings in with a hammer, they typically sit square, but seals sometimes don't get pushed back far enough. Both components need to be perfectly centred.
Seal Lubrication: A dry or improperly lubricated seal can squeak. The seal's primary job is to prevent water reaching the bearings (which causes corrosion) and to stop bearing oil from contaminating your clothes.
Step 3: Lubrication Guidance
Do not use grease on the drum seal, as it will mark and stain your clothing. Instead, apply a light smear of Vaseline around the edge of the seal as a precaution when the seal beds into the shaft. This is sufficient and won't damage fabrics.
Step 4: Reassembly Best Practice
When reassembling your machine:
- Tap bearings in with a hammer to ensure they sit square
- Push seals far enough back to achieve perfect alignment with the shaft
- Double-check belt tension and pulley alignment before running the machine
- Test manually before running a full cycle
If the problem persists after checking these areas, contact a qualified engineer with your video documentation. They can arrange a one-to-one consultation (often via WhatsApp or phone call) to provide targeted guidance based on what they observe in your recording.
