The washing machine was bought in 2010. It was operational for around 12 years. The controller seems to be faulty, hecause it behaves differently if I turn the power cord the other way around in the socket (Schuko). I am capable of writing embedded software and I was thinking that washing machine controllers are quite simple. I am wondering, why there are no generic controllers and I can hardly find any detailed steps on the programmes. I am looking for documentation that explains the washing cycle steps in details. For instance, step one - open cold water valve, step two, wait for 30s or wait for the high level sensor to be active.... 5s CW low RPM, then 5s CCW low RPM, and so on, and so on. I am sure that there is hidden knowledge in the steps and thats why I haven't tried to make a controller myself, because I know it would be suboptimal. Do you happen to know, where I can find such information, i.e. the detailed steps of a wash cycle?

Manufacturers make flow charts that show when each part of a machine is turned on and how long it runs. For example, when a machine is filling with water, the valve opens. The valve stops when the pressure switch detects the right water level, not just after a set time.

I usually can get flow charts, but I couldn't find one right now. They do exist, and I'll try to upload one for you here.

I believe washing machines only need three or four programs: a 90-degree wash, a 60-degree wash, a 40-degree wash, and maybe a cold wash. We just need three types of wash actions: one for wool at one temperature, one for cottons at another, and one cold wash for everyday clothes.

Machines have become too complicated. I understand people want to care for their clothes with energy-efficient and gentle washing methods. You have a good idea, and I think there is demand for simpler machines like this.

For instance, when the machine enters its fill cycle, an inlet valve opens to allow water to enter the drum. The valve closes automatically once a pressure switch detects that the correct water level has been reached—rather than simply waiting for a predetermined time to elapse.

Flow charts of this type are typically available from manufacturers, though I was unable to locate one at the time of writing. These documents do exist, and I will endeavour to source and upload one for your reference.

Do We Really Need So Many Programs?

In my view, most washing machines could function effectively with just three or four core programs. A 90-degree wash cycle, a 60-degree cycle, a 40-degree cycle, and possibly a cold-water option would cover the vast majority of household laundry needs. Fundamentally, there are only three distinct washing actions required: a wool-specific wash at a lower temperature, a cotton wash at a higher temperature, and a general cold-water cycle suitable for everyday garments.

Modern washing machines have become unnecessarily complex. I recognise that consumers value features designed to protect their clothing through energy-efficient and gentle washing methods. Your observation is valid, and there is genuine demand in the market for simpler, more straightforward machines that deliver reliable performance without excessive programme options.
