Miele WMG120 Washing Machine T-Dos Water Path Control Unit Replacement

Customer Question

Hi Paul , Really love your videos and all the advice you give. I’m hoping you can advise on a repair I’ve been going round in circles with, because Miele’s own support has not been much help. A bit of background: the machine is a Miele WMG120 TDos (M-Nr 9819540, type HW18). The fault started as an error on the TDos dosing system. When our engineer opened the machine up to investigate, he found the unit was leaking at the point where the TDos system meets the water path control unit, and identified that as the failed part. The part removed from the machine is marked MR 09011155 (board reference 31690044.01 / EZL270). Miele told us they no longer make this part, and that the replacement is 10550285 (“Lid Water Path Control Unit (WW)”, £133.30). That is the part our engineer actually tried to install - and according to him, it didn’t fit. When I pushed Miele on this, they confirmed 9011155 has been discontinued and, after escalating internally, their technical team simply reconfirmed 10550285 as the correct replacement - the same part that had already failed to fit. That obviously hasn’t resolved anything. Separately, I’ve since sourced a part numbered 9011157, which comes off a Miele WMH120 WPS - a similar but not identical model to mine. I don’t know whether that unit is interchangeable with the 9011155 that failed. Miele have also declined to send an engineer out free of charge, on the basis the machine is out of warranty, despite the fact their own supply chain sent the wrong part in the first place. What I’d really appreciate your view on is: 1. Whether 10550285 is a generic/widely-used replacement unit that’s meant to cover several Miele models, and if so, whether it typically needs an adapter, bracket, or modified fitting to work on a specific model like the WMG120 TDos - something our engineer may simply not have known to fit alongside it. 2. Whether the 9011157 unit from a WMH120 WPS is likely to be physically and electrically compatible with a WMG120 TDos, given how close those two model lines are. 3. Given the original fault was a leak at the TDos/water path junction, whether replacing this one unit (with the right fitting) is likely to fully resolve things, or whether there’s a reasonable chance something else was damaged or is still at fault. I spent a good amount on this machine originally and would rather get it working properly than write it off, but I also don’t want to keep throwing money at parts that turn out not to fit. Any steer you can give on the best way to proceed would be genuinely appreciated. Many thanks, Matt

Paul Repair Expert
Hi Matt,

Thanks for getting in touch regarding you Miele WMG120 Washing Machine, and I am sorry you are dealing with this runaround.

The Legal Side in Plain English

Because your machine was built between 2014 and 2018, it is simply too old for legal action. In the UK, standard consumer rights against faults end after six years. While there is a newer "Right to Repair" rule requiring parts for up to ten years, it only applies to machines made after mid-2021—it does not work backwards. A solicitor will not be able to force Miele's hand, and Miele has no legal duty to send out an engineer for free.

Getting Your Money Back on the Part

Where you are protected is on the replacement part itself. You bought that £133.30 unit because Miele’s technical team explicitly told you it was the direct replacement for your machine. Since it does not physically fit, they supplied the wrong item. You have every right to send it back for a 100% refund, and they should cover the return postage. Do not let them charge you a restocking fee.

Why I Cannot Look Up the Part Details

I would love to give you the exact technical drawings to check if that other part (9011157) will work, but Miele completely blocks independent repairers from accessing their technical database and service bulletins. They keep their technical information tightly locked down inside their own company. For a premium brand that charges top money for their machines, shutting out independent engineers and making DIY repair almost impossible is deeply disappointing.

Make a Video About It

If you have a smartphone, I strongly suggest making a short video showing the machine, the leak, and the replacement part that does not fit. Explain the runaround you got from Miele's support desk and put it up on YouTube. It might not force them to fix your machine tomorrow, but real customer stories shine a spotlight on how poor the support is and help warn thousands of other people facing the exact same problem.

Get your money back on that unfitting part first, and if you can compare the second-hand unit side-by-side with your old one before fitting, that may be your best way forward.

The Miele WMG120 TwinDos (Type HW18) was in production from 2014 through roughly 2018, introduced as part of the first-generation W1 series rollout.

The M-Nr (09819540) identifies the specific UK market build specification rather than the individual production date. To pinpoint the exact month and year for that specific machine:

  • Serial Number (Fabr.-Nr. / No.): Located on the rating plate inside the door aperture. Some Miele series encode the year/week directly in the prefix before the slash (e.g., XX/XXXXXXXX), though Miele's internal database is typically required for full serial decryption.

  • Molded Date Clocks: If the machine is open or the soap drawer is pulled, check the plastic injection date wheels on the detergent dispenser housing, the drain pump casting, or the underside of the top lid. The center arrow points to the year, with dots or numbers indicating the month.

  • PCB / Harness Tags: The paper barcode tags on the main control module (ELP) or motor inverter board carry the QA production date (typically formatted as WW/YY or DD.MM.YY).

I am so sorry this has happened. You spend good money on high-end machines and expect them to last 20 to 30 years, but some companies treat customers badly.

I am against auto-dosing systems. They are too complicated and can cause reliability problems, like the ones you have had with this machine.

All the best,
Paul
