Miele WEI865 Washing Machine Makes Loud Noise on Spin Cycle
Hi, I purchased this Miele WEI865 washing machine brand new in 2022 from John Lewis and since having it, it’s always made this horrible sound. In this particular video I do have an airer next to it but please don’t be fooled, it has always had this horrible noise. I had Miele come out and they said it was because it was on our floor boards, well since then we have put it on plywood and a concrete board and it still sounds like this.
Hi Lori,
Thanks for your question regarding your Miele WEI865 Washing Machine.
Also, thank you for sending over the video—it really helps to see and hear what is going on.
I’ve watched it several times, and I don't hear a major mechanical fault. There is some drum vibration, which can happen if the drum is slightly warped or out of alignment, but it doesn't sound critical in the recording.
Because the washer is sitting on a wooden floor, the sound will naturally be amplified. Miele machines are very heavy, well-built workhorses, and that solid weight combined with high spin speeds can easily echo through floorboards and make normal operational vibrations seem much louder than they actually are. I have a similar Miele running in my workshop that sounds nearly identical.
I tried giving you a ring earlier, but it went straight to voicemail. Could you give me a call or message on WhatsApp? It would be great to see the machine live on video as it ramps up into its highest spin cycle so I can give you a definitive answer.
Kind regards,
Paul
Common Causes of Spin Cycle Noise
Drum Misalignment or Warping
One of the most common reasons for noise during spin is a drum that has become slightly misaligned or warped over time. This causes the drum to vibrate against the tub as it rotates at high speed. While this can sound alarming, minor vibration does not always indicate imminent failure. Miele machines are engineered to tolerate some movement, and the sound may be more noticeable than the actual mechanical issue.
Installation Surface
The floor beneath your washing machine plays a significant role in how loud the spin cycle sounds. Wooden floors, in particular, can amplify vibration and make the noise seem worse than it actually is. If your machine sits on a hard floor with little dampening, sound reverberates through the structure. Placing the machine on a solid, level surface or using vibration-dampening mats can reduce perceived noise.
Weight and Design
Miele washing machines are built to be durable workhorses, which means they are considerably heavier than many competitors. This weight contributes to their reliability, but it also means spin cycles can produce noticeable vibration. If your machine is performing its wash and spin cycles normally and draining properly, the noise may simply be a characteristic of the model.
When to Seek Professional Help
If the noise is accompanied by other symptoms—such as poor drainage, clothes remaining wet after spin, unusual grinding sounds, or visible damage to the drum—contact a qualified technician. However, if the machine is functioning normally and the noise is primarily vibration during high spin, the issue may not be urgent.
For a detailed assessment, a technician should observe the machine during a full spin cycle, particularly at maximum speed. Video evidence can be helpful, but a live inspection allows the engineer to feel vibration levels and rule out more serious faults.
Tips to Reduce Noise
- Ensure the machine is level and stable on its installation surface.
- Use vibration-dampening mats or isolation pads beneath the machine.
- Check that the drum is not overloaded, as excess weight increases vibration.
If you remain concerned about the noise level, arrange a professional inspection.
