Hoover DHL 1482D3/1-80 Washing Machine Shows E09 Error During Spinning In Last Minutes of the Cycle

Customer Question

We experienced an E08 code on our Hoover DHL 1482D3/1-80 washing machine a couple of times then the drum stopped turning altogether when a cycle began. Various searches suggested the brushes. I replaced those, which were unevenly worn. One had a good bit left on it, the other was totally worn down. After fitting, the drum turned again as normal and the wash cycle progressed as it should, washing and rinsing. The new problem came at the end of the cycle during the final spinning. With a minute or so left on the display, the spin got progressively faster until the machine was shaking and then the E09 came on and the cycle cut out before the spin had finished. The clothes were clean but still wetter than they should be. Further searches for cutting out during a spin with an E09 suggested a problem now with the PCB. On inspection, there was black residue on both sides of the PCB around the heat sink area but no noticeable damage or burning to components once wiped away. The very presence of the residue did however suggest component failure of some kind. There was also a lot of residue on the back of the drum unit and the pulley wheel. I put the latter down to the carbon from the brushes. I did test the motor with a multimeter and there was resistance continuity on the relevant terminals which suggest the motor is OK. Would these be correct assumptions and that a replacement of the PCB is likely required? If so, is there a way to check the health of the bearing(s) before investing in a new board? I am willing to invest in the board but only if the drum and bearings are good. A whole new drum assembly puts that into the realms of scrapping and replacing. All of the time, the water drained without issue and ran clear. The filter only contained a couple of tiny bits, nothing to cause a blockage. I don't know the exact age of the machine as we are struggling to locate the documentation but the label on the PCB was dated 2018 so the likelihood is about 7 years old. I would really appreciate an expert opinion and hopefully I have provided enough to go on. Thanks in advance Leigh

Hi Leigh,

Thanks for sharing this detailed technical guidance. If you're experiencing an E09 error on your Hoover DHL 1482D3/1-80 washing machine during the final stages of the spin cycle, the issue may not always be the circuit board itself — here's what to check first.

Inspect the Motor Brushes and Armature

Worn carbon brushes are a common culprit. As brushes deteriorate, they can damage the armature beneath them, which in turn may affect the circuit board. Before assuming the board has failed, examine both the brushes and the armature carefully. Look for excessive wear, pitting, or scoring on the armature surface.

Check for Carbon Dust Buildup

As carbon brushes wear down, they shed fine black dust that accumulates around the motor and electrical components. This residue can collect on the circuit board, around the back of the machine, and near other electrical parts. While carbon dust itself may not directly cause failure, heavy buildup can interfere with connections and heat dissipation. Clean away any visible dust and debris carefully.

Test Motor Resistance

If motor resistance is abnormal, the circuit board may trigger a safety shutdown to prevent high-speed spinning. This protective response can feel like a board failure but is actually a safety feature. Testing the motor resistance with a multimeter can help determine whether the motor or the board is at fault.

Finding Replacement Parts and Machines

Use your washing machine's model number to search for compatible parts on our website, eBay, and Facebook Marketplace. You may also find complete machines with different faults — for example, a unit with damaged drum bearings but fully functional electronics — which could provide working parts for your repair.

Next Steps

If you've checked the brushes, armature, and motor resistance and still need guidance, contact us with your findings. Technical PDF documentation and direct support are available to help you decide whether repair or replacement makes sense for your situation.
