Hisense wdqa9014evjm Drum stops makes loud noise
When on a programme, the drum tumbles fine then the drum trys to move but can't. then a loud grinding noise appears. Keeps doing it then it tumbles some more then grinds to a halt again. Most of the time we have to pause the programme then start it again to get it moving on. Sometimes we have to abort it as it happens too many times. My brother thinks it's needing a new motor. Hope you can help. Thanks
Tools Required
Thank you for sharing the video, Cheryl. The footage clearly shows the issue and gives us a solid starting point for diagnosis. Let's break down what we're seeing and what it means for your Hisense WDQA9014EVJM washing machine.
The Loose Pulley Wheel
From the video, the pulley wheel appears to have play in it—it's moving more than it should. The pulley is a critical component that sits behind the drum and guides it as it rotates. When the bolt securing the pulley becomes loose, the wheel can shift during operation, creating that distinctive noise you're hearing. This is often the easiest problem to fix: the bolt simply needs to be tightened or replaced if it's damaged.
However, a loose pulley is sometimes a symptom rather than the root cause. If the bolt keeps coming loose, something else may be causing excessive vibration or wear.
Motor Shaking and Vibration
The shaking you can see in the video is the real concern. A motor that vibrates excessively during operation points to one of two problems: a faulty circuit board or a failing motor itself.
Understanding the Circuit Board Issue
Your machine uses an induction motor controlled by a three-phase circuit board. This board regulates the electrical current flowing to the motor, controlling its speed and direction. When the circuit board fails—due to component degradation, burnt-out capacitors, or damaged transistors—it can't deliver consistent power to the motor. The result is erratic motor behaviour: shaking, stuttering, or inability to reach full speed.
Circuit board failures are common in modern washing machines because these boards operate under constant electrical stress. Power surges, moisture ingress, and manufacturing defects can all contribute to premature failure.
When It's the Motor Itself
Less commonly, the motor itself may be faulty. Internal bearing wear, winding damage, or rotor problems can cause vibration. A faulty motor will typically show consistent symptoms across different wash cycles, whereas a bad circuit board may cause intermittent issues.
How to Diagnose Which One
You'll need someone with electrical diagnostic equipment—specifically a multimeter and ideally an oscilloscope—to test the circuit board and motor. Here's what they should check:
- Circuit board voltage output: A technician can measure the voltage the board is sending to the motor. Inconsistent or incorrect readings indicate a faulty board.
- Motor resistance: Using a multimeter, they can test the motor windings for continuity and resistance. Abnormal readings suggest motor failure.
- Motor run test: With the board disconnected, a bench test of the motor under controlled power can reveal mechanical issues.
What to Do Next
Before purchasing any parts, arrange for a qualified washing machine technician to inspect and test your machine. Bring the video with you or show it to them—it will help them understand the problem immediately. They can perform the diagnostic tests above and give you a clear answer about whether you need a new circuit board, motor, or simply a pulley wheel adjustment.
In the meantime, avoid running the machine. Continued operation with a loose pulley or faulty motor can cause damage to the drum bearing or other components, turning a simple repair into an expensive one.
Unfortunately, Hisense doesn't provide detailed technical documentation for this model to the repair community, so a hands-on diagnosis is your best option. However, this model is common enough that most experienced technicians will have seen these faults before and can advise you quickly.
