Bosch WAT28480CS/01 Washing Machine Shows E51 Error Code & Motor Not Turning
At first, my Bosch WAT28480CS Washing Machine displayed a “too much foam” warning, even though there was actually no excessive foam in the machine. After running the diagnostics, it now goes into error E51 every time it is supposed to turn the motor. The motor has not turned at all since then. Near the motor, it seems that the wiring harness was probably missing a cable-tie attachment, and the insulation of one power wire and three signal wires (to the 3G sensor) was rubbed through against the cable-tie holder. The wires are not broken, and it does not look as though they could have shorted against each other. Or at least it seems unlikely — it is difficult to say for sure. There are no visible burn marks. On the three-phase power bridge, I measured the forward voltage of all six diodes at 450–480 mV, so the transistors may be OK. On the signal wires, there are BAV99 protection diodes both on the 3G sensor side and on the processor side, and I also measured these as being OK. I would like to ask what exactly error E51 means and whether there is any way to diagnose the problem more precisely. Thank you for the excellent guides. The E51 / E00-51 / F51 / F00-51 error codes specifically indicate a communication or power problem relating to the inverter module, which is why your motor is failing to turn. Depending on your exact version, this inverter module is sometimes built directly into the main printed circuit board (PCB), and other times it operates as a separate unit down near the motor.
Here is what you need to check and how to approach this repair:
1. Check the Wiring Harness for Continuity Before assuming the expensive circuit board is dead, you must rule out a communication error caused by a broken wire. You need to check every single wire running from the motor up to the circuit board to ensure they have continuity. Even if there is no visible damage to the outer casing, the copper wire inside can fracture from the vibrations of the machine spinning.
2. The Inverter Module / Circuit Board Issue Many modern washing machines have known issues with their inverter modules. As you will see in the video, these induction motors are controlled entirely by the circuit board. If the board has failed, replacing it with a brand-new one is unfortunately very costly—often running into hundreds of pounds because they must be specifically pre-programmed for your exact model.

A Great Money-Saving Tip: Because manufacturers often price new parts so high (though new European right-to-repair laws are slowly trying to make them responsible for this strategy), it might be worth looking on eBay or Facebook Marketplace for a secondhand donor machine. You can often buy a complete machine with a different fault (like collapsed bearings) for very cheap, allowing you to harvest its perfectly good motor and pre-programmed circuit board.
