Bosch WAN28261BY/19 Washing Machine Drum Catches Randomly But Able to Spin It By Hand

Customer Question

Hello Paul! Thanks for this great website you have, lot of informations are shared. Although I am not sure I am going to ask you for a repair in person because I live in Hungary, but I'd love to hear your opinion about the behaviour of my Bosch WAN28261BY/19 washing machine's drum. The washing machine works properly, but this scraping noise can also be heard during the wash cycle when it rotates at low speeds. There is no such noise during the spin cycle, and the spinning completes without any issues. What I find strange, as you can see in the video, is that it doesn't always catch at the same spot, but completely randomly. My question is whether it's possible to tell from the video what the issue might be, and what parts would need to be replaced? Ultimately, is it worth getting it repaired? (noises at 0:04, 0:08, 0:20, 0:23, 0:25) Thank you very much in advance Have a nice day! Daniel

Hi Daniel,

Thanks for your question regarding your Bosch WAN28261BY/19 Washing Machine.

Also, thank you for sending the video—it really helps with diagnosing the problem.

Actually, one of my favorite places to go is Hungary. I haven't been there for many years. I used to go to Lake Balaton, which was one of my favorite places for traveling around. I would love to come back one day.

Anyway, it looks like something may be wrapped around the heating element at the bottom of the drum. This could be a piece of wire, often from a bra. These wires can slip between the inner and outer drum and catch on the heating element.

Here's how to investigate:

  1. Watch the video included to see the diagnostic process step by step.
  2. First, try removing the sump hose from the bottom of the drum to the pump.
  3. Clean it out thoroughly and look through the opening with a torch.
  4. You may be able to see the wire from this angle.

If you cannot see the wire this way, you may need to remove the heating element. Our YouTube channel has detailed videos that can walk you through this process.

I've also included exploded diagrams of your Bosch WAN28261BY/19 to help you find parts or diagnose other faults.

Please get back in touch if you need any further help or if the issue persists.
