Belling XOU69MF Cooker Oven Trips Out After About 5 Minutes

Customer Question

Hello Paul I've watched several of your YouTube tutorials and have to say, thank goodness there are people out there like yourself! People like me need this! I am a single mum and unfortunately i have little means financially. Three years ago my 20+Yr old fan assisted Belling XOU69MF Cooker Oven stopped working This happened after I had spent hours cleaning it!! It does actually work but trips out after about 5 minutes. At the time I got several quotes to have it repaired. Quotes ranged between £130 and £210 before VAT! In the end I bought a shelf type airfryer (cheap on Groupon) and we get buy using this. I used to love home baking and cooking roast dinners but they've alway turned out to be a disaster in the airfryer, so I gave up. Having watched your YouTube video on replacing the element I really feel I could do this myself. I've been told the element is the problem. Because my oven is so old I'm worried whether I will be able to purchase a suitable new element. Given how many modern Bellings have been manufactured since, I'm worried the element part I need might have been discontinued? Also, the inside of my belling doesn't seem to look the same as the one in your video? I also think I would have to access the wiring from the back? I know it's so old but if there is a way I could fix it myself I'd be over the moon! It would be lovely to cook Christmas dinner in a proper oven this year! I would be extremely grateful for any advice you could give me which might help me to be able to try and fix it myself. Or even if you feel it's beyond repair, at least I would know what my options are.

Hi Claire, so sorry to hear about the problem with your Belling XOU69MF Cooker Oven.

Also, thanks very much for sending over the photos of the fault.

Thank you for reaching out and sharing your story. I completely understand the frustration of trying to cook a proper roast or bake in an air fryer, but the good news is that we can absolutely get your oven working in time for Christmas dinner.

First, let me put your mind at ease regarding your two biggest worries:

  1. Parts availability: Even though your Belling XOU69MF is over 20 years old, manufacturers often use standard circular fan elements across hundreds of models. The element you need is almost certainly still manufactured, easily available, and very affordable.

  2. The 5-minute trip: Your oven tripping the electrics after 5 minutes is a classic symptom of a faulty element. When the element heats up, the metal expands. If there is a tiny internal crack (which can sometimes be aggravated by heavy cleaning or moisture), the expanding internal wire touches the outer casing, causing a short to earth. The safety switch in your fuse box detects this and cuts the power.

Because you mentioned you are not very technically minded, I want to emphasize safety first. Before doing any work, the cooker must be completely isolated from the mains power at your fuse board. If you are in any doubt whatsoever about working with electricity or moving the cooker, please ask a friend who is a bit more electrically minded to assist you.

Here is how to confirm the issue and replace the element safely.

How to Test the Element

Because your oven only trips after 5 minutes of getting hot, testing the element cold with a multimeter often won't show the fault. The most reliable DIY way to test it is by elimination:

  1. Turn the power OFF at the main fuse board.

  2. Access the back of the element (instructions below), and pull the two power wires off the element's metal spade terminals.

  3. Wrap the ends of both loose wires securely in electrical insulating tape so they cannot touch anything, including each other or the metal casing.

  4. Turn the power back on and run the oven for 10–15 minutes.

  5. The Verdict: If the oven runs perfectly without tripping the electrics, you have proven 100% that the element is the culprit.

How to Replace the Element

You mentioned your oven looks slightly different from the one in my video and that you might need to access the wiring from the back. You are spot on. Some older Belling models require you to pull the oven forward to access the rear wiring.

Step 1: Preparation and Safety
Turn the cooker switch off on the wall, and turn off the main breaker for the cooker at your household fuse board. Double-check the oven has no power.

Step 2: Remove the Fan Cover
Open the oven door and locate the metal panel at the very back of the inside cavity (this covers the fan blade). Remove the screws holding this plate in place and take the plate out. You will now see the circular heating element surrounding the fan.

Step 3: Free the Element
Remove the mounting screws that hold the circular element to the back wall of the oven.

Step 4: Access the Wires
Gently pull the element toward you. Sometimes, there is enough slack in the wires to pull them through into the oven cavity. If they are too short or get stuck, do not force them. You will need to pull the oven out from its housing, unscrew the rear metal cover panel on the outside back of the oven, and manually disconnect the two wires from the element terminals there.

Step 5: Swap and Reassemble
Take note of which wire goes where (take a quick photo on your phone). Unplug the wires from the old element and plug them firmly onto the new element. Push the element back into place, secure it with the mounting screws, and reattach the inside fan cover.

If you have your appliance serial number, you can easily look up the exact replacement part online. Take your time, follow the safety steps, and you will have your baking back on track in no time. I've also added some videos to assist you, and there will be some spare parts for your model listed below. Do take the time to match it up to your existing element, taking note of all the measurements. As you have not provided me the serial number, it is down to you to match the correct one up. It is not a difficult job, and if you need further assistance in identifying the part, feel free to contact us with the contact details I sent you in the email.  i think this is the element you need but please check  https://how-to-repair.com/products/beko-belling-brandt-hygena-cooker-fan-oven-element-2000w-20-40112-000
